High School in a Pandemic

Attending school in person for face-to-face learning provides a built-in structure for in-person instruction, external structure, and accountability.

Built-in Structure

Attending school in person for face-to-face learning provides a built-in structure for in-person instruction, external structure, and accountability.

Opportunities exist for direct modeling and guided practice as the teacher is able to address challenges in-the-moment. Students, also, can seek answers to questions as they encounter issues. Finally, there is more opportunity for collaborative work through partnering or small-group work. Scheduling is integrated into the daily framework. Even within the classroom, students work within a schedule created by the instructor. This external framework enables students to focus on work completion with a decreased responsibility for managing their time. Homework assignments may be reviewed, as a group, in class or submitted for review by the teacher. Whatever approach is used, students are accountable for showing the work completed. Accountability supports task initiation, as well as maintaining energy as the student knows their work will be checked.

Strategies – Technologies – Resources
  • Instruction
    • Partner with another student to learn through teaching and provide each other with motivation.
  • External Structure
    • Set an agreed-upon time with a partner to establish a habit of assigning a time, setting an alert, and getting started.
  • Accountability
    • Review work with a partner for a fresh perspective on clarity, completeness, and accuracy.
