Strategic Approaches to Self-motivation

Self-motivation equals action. Yet, too often, students are paralyzed by their belief that self-motivation is an all-or-nothing capacity. They are either motivated, or they aren’t. Yet with an understanding of current research and practical strategies, educators can scaffold the development of student self-motivation. Strategic approaches to self-motivation starts with an exploration of the attitudes, skills, and knowledge that provides a foundation for self-motivation. At each step, strategies are discussed before moving to case studies that enable the application of research-based concepts.

  • 3 Factors Impacting Self-Motivation
    • Autonomy
    • Competence
    • Intrinsic Motivation
  • 4 Challenges to Self-Motivation
    • Multi-tasking aka Task-switching
    • Executive Functions
    • Working Memory
    • Procrastination

Taming Executive Functioning

Executive functions equate with successful self-management. However, especially for neurodiverse and at-risk students, the impact of limitations in one or more executive functions can escalate into chaos in school and at home. By combining research-based knowledge of executive functioning fundamentals with practical strategies, educators can empower students to manage their time and actions effectively and efficiently. This workshop provides both knowledge, exploration, and practical application.

  • Overview of Executive Functioning
    • Executive Functions: Definition & Importance
    • Neurodiversity & Executive Dysfunction
    • Executive Functioning & Working Memory
  • Strategic Approaches to 4 Key Executive Functions
    • Prioritizing
    • Planning
    • Shifting/Thinking Flexibly
    • Self-monitoring/Self-checking

Unpacking the Dimensions of Learning

Learning is a complex process driven by need, interest, and curiosity. This workshop combines an understanding of the four stages of memory with research-based strategies to support both neurotypical and neurodivergent students. In particular, we will explore strategic approaches to three common learning challenges. Using the knowledge gained, educators will identify approaches to supporting students in taking proactive approaches to their learning.

  • Overview of The Learning Process
    • Factors That Impact Learning
    • 4 Stages of Memory
  • Challenges to Learning
    • Social-emotional Challenges
    • Neurodiversity: Reading & Writing
  • Strategic Approaches 3 Key Academic Areas
    • Reading for Comprehension
    • Organizing for Writing
    • Working Memory Functioning

Strategic Approaches to Working Memory Functioning

Memories are the foundation of learning. Unfortunately, like motivation, students tend to see themselves as having a good or bad memory. The good news is that memory is multi-faceted and pliable. Using the knowledge and strategies explored in this workshop, educators can support students in increasing the efficiency and effectiveness of their learning.

  • Overview of the Four Stages of Memory
  • Working Memory
    • Actions of Working Memory
    • Working Memory Challenges
  • Strategic Approaches
    • 10 Study Strategies
    • Hermann Ebbinghaus & Mental Fatigue

Strategic Approaches to Organization of Time & Actions

Chaos reigns! Too often, our students cannot demonstrate their knowledge and skills due to organizational challenges. Instead, they either run out of time or engage in non-productive actions. However, as educators, we can provide students with the knowledge and strategies to improve their effectiveness and efficiency. Through this workshop, you will gain research-based knowledge of organizational approaches. In addition, through case studies and discussion practical strategies for prioritizing, planning, and reflection will be explored.

  • The Value of Effectiveness & Efficiency
  • Prioritizing Time & Actions
  • Planning as a Process
  • Feedback & Reflection
